Prior to joining the FDA, Mr. Runyon operated as a senior scientist within Scientech Inc., from 1989 to 2000. Many of his responsibilities pertained to the handling of hazardous materials, including emergency response, risk assessment and risk management. He also worked as an adjunct assistant professor at Chapman University from 1979 to 1989, and an environmental health specialist, supervisor and manager within Santa Barbara County, California, from 1979 to 1984 and again from 1985 to 1989. From 1984 to 1985, he treated toxic wastewater generated during the launch of the NASA space shuttle. Before embarking on his vocational journey, Mr. Runyon pursued a formal education at California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 1971. He subsequently continued his studies at Humboldt State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in biology in 1975 and a Master of Science in biology in 1978. In addition to his academic credentials, he is also certified to teach in community college. As part of his commitment to his profession, Mr. Runyon remains affiliated with several organizations, including the Union of Concerned Scientists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to his professional experience, Mr. Runyon is well regarded for his dedication to civic advocacy, and he has received several honors and accolades for his performance in the field. To this end, he attributes his many accomplishments to his perseverance and drive. After originally pursuing a career in criminal justice, Mr. Runyon found he deeply enjoyed the sciences, and he is proud to have found a wealth of success after pivoting into the field of biology and working alongside many acclaimed companies and organizations. With over 45 years of professional experience to his credit, Richard G. Runyon has cultivated a career in the field of biology.
