Over the course of her career, Dr. Woods has conducted a great deal of research at the university and with the NIDA, which includes her discovery of a method to block neuronal cell death in traumatic brain injuries while using specific peptides. Well regarded for her creative output, as well, Dr. Woods has authored several scholarly papers and journals pertaining to her research in the field, and she has been cited in over 18,000 works. To commemorate her accomplishments, she was honored with the NIDA Director’s Award of Merit in recognition of service on the Scientific PMAP Working Group in 2012, and she received a Woman Scientist Achievement Award in 2011. Recently, she earned the Al Yergey MS Scientist Award in 2023. Having always been interested in the fields of science, especially chemistry, Dr. Woods attributes much of her success to the love and support of her husband and the guidance of her colleagues and mentors. With over five decades of experience to her credit, Dr. Amina S. Woods is a proven leader in the field of education. Specializing in health care, chemistry and research sciences, she has served as an adjunct professor in the department of pharmacology and molecular sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since 2013. Additionally, since 2016, she has operated as a member of the department of pediatrics and the division of neonatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Woods previously held the position of director of the structural biology unit of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program from 1999 to 2021. Dr. Woods originally began her career in 1969, working as a chemistry associate in the clinical chemistry laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital until 1972. She subsequently worked as a supervisor in the enzymology laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical Center from 1973 to 1975. She first joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979, working as a laboratory coordinator and supervisor for the AMINA S.
