123 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Retired since 1996, Dr. Imogene Mathison Mixson cultivated a successful career of academic excellence as an educator. Between 1959 and 1966, she taught English at Dothan High School. In that time, Dr. Mixson quickly gained recognition for her dedication in the field, and in 1966, she joined Enterprise State Community College as an English instructor and was named English department chair in 1968, a role in which she served until 1982. From 1982 to 1996, she operated at Wallace State Community College as an English instructor and the academic dean until her retirement. Prior to beginning her vocational journey, Dr. Mixson pursued her own formal education at Troy University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1959. She subsequently attended Auburn University, where she earned a Master of Science in 1963. After she earned a PhD at Florida State University in 1972, she completed postdoctoral coursework at Troy University in 1980, as well as at the University of Southern Mississippi between 1981 and 1982. Dr. Mixson has received numerous accolades, including the Teacher of the Year Award from Enterprise State Community College in 1973, 1977 and 1980, as well as the Distinguished Leadership Award from Alabama Community College System in 1991. Furthermore, she was recognized as a Distinguished Educator by the College of Education at Florida State University in 2016. Most recently, Wallace State Community College recognized her contributions by naming the Dr. Imogene Mathison Mixson Writing Center in her honor. The naming ceremony was held on December 8, 2021. Adjacent to her vocational duties, she has maintained membership with the Legacy Giving Council at Troy University, the Ozark Literary Club and the Dale County Education Retirees Association. From an early age, Dr. Mixson knew she wanted to be a teacher, as she always excelled in school and loved helping others. She is proud to have been selected for the alumnus awards at all three of her alma maters, as they reminded her of many fond memories from her collegiate studies. In the coming years, Dr. Mixson intends to continue enjoying her retirement and remaining passionate in promoting educational opportunities.
