104 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION JAMES NEWTON FORDEMWALT, PHD PROFESSOR EMERITUS Arizona State University Meridian, ID Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. James Newton Fordemwalt has cultivated a fulfilling career as an educator. Since 2001, he has held the prestigious title of professor emeritus at Arizona State University, where he originally began teaching students in microelectronics engineering technology in 1987. In addition, Dr. Fordemwalt has served as an engineering consultant with the Western Design Center in Mesa, Arizona, since 1980, and he was a member of the semiconductor committee of the United Technologies Corporation from 1978 to 1987. Though he was initially interested in the field of chemistry, which was his father’s specialty, Dr. Fordemwalt learned to blend his academic studies with his interest in electronics. He began his career working as a senior engineer with General Electric Company between 1959 and 1960 before subsequently joining U.S. Semcor Inc., and operating in the same role between 1960 and 1961. Shortly thereafter, he joined the semiconductor products division at Motorola as a section manager, a role in which he operated from 1961 to 1966. Dr. Fordemwalt’s transition into the field of academia came in 1972 when he began working as an associate research professor at the University of Utah, where he taught students from 1972 to 1976. After functioning as the director of the microelectronics laboratory at the University of Arizona between 1976 and 1987, he joined Arizona State University in 1987. During his time at the acclaimed university, Dr. Fordemwalt operated in several notable roles, including as an associate professor, the associate chair of microelectronics, and the assistant chair of the department of electronics and computer technology, before attaining emeritus status in 2001. Prior to embarking upon his vocational journey, Dr. Fordemwalt pursued his own formal education, beginning at the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1955 and a Master of Science in 1956. He subsequently attended the University of Iowa, where he achieved a PhD in 1960. To remain abreast of developments within his field, he has also maintained membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
