He is a 34-year retired Army (senior chief warrant officer) veteran, having also served in the Air Force for four years. During his involvement in Gulf War I, he received a Bronze Star and several other combat recognitions for his work as a crisis first responder. Dr. Johnson holds several degrees, including a JD from Barry University, an LLM in international taxation, cum laude, from St. Thomas University, and a PhD in public policy and administration, summa cum laude, from Walden University. He was inducted into the Library of Congress for military achievements in 2021 and earned a certificate of special congressional recognition from Darren Soto in recognition of his service in the global war on terrorism in 2022 and a U.S. Congressional Record citation in the 116th Congress Second in 2020. He earned the 2023 Osceola County’s Lt. Lloyd Burton Jr. Service Award for his work with the Osceola County community. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. R. LeWayne Johnson has cultivated a fulfilling career in military and governmental service. Since 2021, he has served as the founder, president and chief executive officer of The Florida Coalition to Prevent Veteran Homelessness Inc., partnering with other organizations to support veterans with jobs, clothing, shelter, food and mental health treatment. Likewise, he is the pro bono director of compliance with the Walden University chapter of the Fulbright Association, pro bono executive director of the Homeless Veterans’ Program for the Mercy Foundation Inc., deputy assistant program manager of foreign military sales international programs for the Department of the Navy, and congressional advisor in military affairs for the U.S. House of Representatives for Congressman Darren Soto for the State of Florida.
