Before retiring, Dr. Goggans served on the faculty of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where she taught nutrition, marriage and family living, and food service in the hospitality industry. For 30 years, she was director of the Diet Clinic at Regenstrief Ambulatory Health Center at Wishard Hospital, a position that had never existed prior to her assuming the role. She also worked as assistant director of dietary services at Methodist Hospital for five years before being called back to Wishard, where her career began in 1961. Attending Indiana University, Dr. Goggans graduated with a BA in 1956, a master’s degree in education in 1969, and a doctorate from the School of Medicine in 1982. She completed postgraduate work at Butler University in marriage and family counseling, becoming certified in 1994. Dr. Goggans was a member of the American Dietetic Association for over 50 years, serving on the board for four years, and the Central Indiana Dietetic Association, serving as treasurer for four years. She was a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, serving on their board for over seven years. She was honored with Distinguished Alumni Service Awards from IUPUI in 2019 and from Indiana University in 2020. She was also named a Lute Trout Fellow by the Indiana Dietetic Association in 1980. She attributes her success to her grandmother and mother, both of whom were role models and sources of inspiration. Dr. Goggans is particularly proud of her work with the Central Indiana Council on Aging, where she was part of a group of dietitians who established nutrition services for the elderly in Indianapolis, leading to the Meals on Wheels program in Central Indiana. With over 60 years of experience, Dr. Louise E. Goggans is a leader in the health care industry. Though she is mostly retired from work, she has continued to contribute to her community as a nutritionist, consultant and community advocate.
