266 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS in his native India, he received a pre-med degree from Madras Medical College in 1961 and an MBBS in 1966. From there, Dr. Appavu served as an assistant medical officer in charge of surgical service for the Danish Mission Hospital in Tirukoilur, India. Immigrating to the United States shortly thereafter, he completed several internships, residencies and fellowships. As a testament to his success, Dr. Appavu has received numerous accolades. In 2017, he earned the Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, having previously been named among America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumer’s Research Council of America between 2008 and 2012. Likewise named America’s Top Physician from 2007 to 2008, he was also voted by surgical residents for the Best Teacher Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Appavu has contributed a myriad of articles to peer-reviewed journals over the course of his career, as well. Recognized as a professor emeritus since 2019, Dr. Samuel K. Appavu served as a professor of surgery and surgical specialties in the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford beginning in 2003. Drawing upon over 50 years of professional expertise in medicine, he previously served in various roles with such medical clinics as Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, Affiliated Surgeons of Rockford, the John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Cook County Hospital and the University of Illinois Hospital, among others. Likewise, Dr. Appavu served as a clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago from 1999 to 2003, having also served as a lecturer and surgeon at the Rush University Medical College in Chicago from 1995 to 2003. Notably, while involved with the John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Dr. Appavu was the founding program director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Training Program from 1983 to 2003. Dr. Appavu holds a medical license in the state of Illinois and is board certified in surgical critical care and surgery. First receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Madras SAMUEL K.
