139 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION TEACHER (RETIRED) Anchorage School District Anchorage, AK BAND DIRECTOR Capitol Middle Magnet School Baker, LA SUSAN JOHNSON With 40 years of professional experience, Susan Johnson has cultivated a career in the field of education. Prior to retiring in 2001, she worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Montana for 12 years. She previously spent 20 years of her career serving as a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher in the Anchorage School District in Alaska, as well as a professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Since retiring, Ms. Johnson has awarded scholarships to promising students in honor of her mother. Ms. Johnson became involved in her field after attending an orientation on education classes. During this course, she discovered her interest in becoming a teacher and sharing her knowledge with students. Subsequent to completing her collegiate studies, Ms. Johnson formally began her career as an educator. As the eldest of five children, she was already quite familiar with managing younger children. Therefore, she naturally excelled as an elementary school teacher. To this end, she largely attributes her success to her experiences growing up in an energetic family environment. Ms. Johnson hopes to continue helping her community by educating others on how to care for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Having accumulated a wealth of experience, Sherman Leggett is a staunch advocate in the fields of music education and civic leadership. He recently began operating as the band director at Capitol Middle Magnet School in Louisiana in 2021, and he has served in the same position for the American Legion Post 350 for the past 10 years. Well-versed in musical performance, as well, Mr. Leggett specializes in wind instruments, particularly the trumpet. Mr. Leggett pursued a formal education at the University of New Orleans, earning a bachelor’s degree in music education in 2011. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in wind band conducting at Messiah University. Mr. Leggett also remains affiliated with the National Association for Music Education. Attributing much of his success to his malleability and willingness to adapt to the needs of his students, Mr. Leggett was inspired to pursue a career as an educator by his former high school band director, Karen Matthews. In the coming years, Mr. Leggett hopes to teach at the collegiate level, earn a doctorate degree and be remembered for helping students expand their perceptions of the world. SHERMAN LEGGETT
