150 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING With nearly 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Walter R. Butler has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of nuclear engineering. Prior to retiring in 1995, he served as a project director for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which he initially joined in 1967. He previously operated as a nuclear engineer for Aerojet General Corporation from 1962 to 1967. Dr. Butler began his career in 1957, working as a nuclear engineer with a nucleonics subsidiary of Aerojet General Corporation until 1962. Before embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Butler honorably served with the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1952. After retiring from military service, he pursued a formal education, beginning with his time at the University of California Berkeley. Throughout his studies at the university, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1956 and a Master of Science in engineering science in 1957. He subsequently continued his studies at California State University, Sacramento, receiving a Master of Business Administration in 1966. Dr. Butler achieved a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland in 1972. Well regarded for his expertise in the field, Dr. Butler has contributed several scholarly articles to the American Nuclear Society, a group in which he participated as a member from 1957 to 1970. Outside of his primary interests, he is an avid swimmer and numismatist. Over the course of his career, Dr. Butler has attributed much of his success to his mother, who constantly supported him and instilled in him the importance of a proper education. To this end, he has always lived and worked by his motto, “Every difficulty leads to an opportunity.” In the coming years, Dr. Butler hopes that more individuals will come to understand the benefits of nuclear power.
