260 HEALTH AND WELLNESS FELIPE I. TOLENTINO, MD RETINAL SPECIALIST, SURGEON Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary Lakeland, FL Hailing from the Philippines, Dr. Felipe I. Tolentino always held a natural interest in helping others. Seeking to accomplish this goal through the field of medicine, he was ultimately inspired by his late uncle, who was a doctor as well as Dr. Tolentino’s role model. Driven to pursue medicine at a higher level, Dr. Tolentino attended the College of Liberal Arts at the University of the Philippines, earning an Associate of Arts in 1952. Thereafter, he attended the School of Medicine at the University of the Philippines, from which he received an MD in 1957. During this time, Dr. Tolentino completed a rotating internship and was a resident in ophthalmology at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila. Immigrating to the United States shortly thereafter, Dr. Tolentino also completed residencies and fellowships at such institutions and facilities as St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, New York; Homer G. Philipps Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri; and the Eye Research Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Throughout his career, which has spanned over 60 years, Dr. Tolentino served a myriad of hospitals and schools in medical and educational capacities. Previously serving his alma mater as an instructor, visiting research ophthalmologist and assistant professor, he also excelled as an attending surgeon at the Manila Medical Center. Likewise, Dr. Tolentino joined the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in 1975, where he served as a clinical professor until 1985. Since 1986, he has thrived as an associate clinical professor at Harvard Medical School. Concurrent with this role, he joined the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston in 1980 as an assistant surgeon in ophthalmology, remaining in the role until 1983. Since 1983, he has served as an associate surgeon. Furthermore, Dr. Tolentino has been an associate scientist at the Eye Research Institute through the Retina Foundation since 1971, as well as a staff member at Warren Memorial Hospital since 1982 and Hahnemann Hospital since 1983. He further maintains membership with the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Retina Society and is licensed to practice Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine
