Specializing in regenerative medicine and biochemistry, he currently holds the title of professor emeritus at the University of Utah, having taught students there as a professor in medicine, nephrology and physiology from 1983 to 2022. In addition to his endeavors as an educator, he also operates as the owner of SymbioCellTech LLC. Dr. Westenfelder founded the company in 1992, focusing on providing stem cell-enabled therapy to patients with diabetes. Much of Dr. Westenfelder’s performance in the field was born from his academic journey. He began his collegiate studies at Wilhelm College in Stuttgart, Germany, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He subsequently continued his studies at the University of Kiel-Luebeck, where he earned an MD in 1968. After completing his studies, Dr. Westenfelder began his career as an intern in medicine in Berlin, Germany, and Chicago, Illinois, between 1969 and 1971. As part of his dedication to his profession, Dr. Westenfelder remains affiliated with several industry-related organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Society for Nephrology and the International Society of Nephrology. Adjacent to his professional endeavors, he is also known for his commitment to civic advocacy, regularly volunteering with the National Kidney Foundation. Well regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Westenfelder was recognized as a research grantee by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association in 1975. Dr. Westenfelder pursued a career in his industry because of his interest in scientific studies and conducting research. Throughout his career, he has been especially proud to have contributed to stem cell research and the development of new technologies that could potentially be used to cure type I diabetes. In the coming years, Dr. Westenfelder hopes to have completed clinical trials for his stem cell-enabled therapy and have it patented and marketed. DR.
