Change is an inevitability of the human experience. As we segue from 2023 to 2024, the transitional nature of our world proves to be equal parts evolutionary and complex. The WHO announced the end of the global health emergency related to COVID-19, solar power and sustainable energy solutions have been on the rise, and the “Barbie” film encouraged us to reexamine societal norms, mental health and gender roles. Humanity has also recently faced numerous far-reaching and impactful world events. The development and use of AI technology continue to expand, a number of natural disasters — including tropical cyclones and earthquakes — have affected thousands, and war persists in Ukraine and Gaza. In times such as these, we seek sound and sensible guidance from staunch leadership figures. Experience, self-control and trustworthiness are all attributes of admirable leaders, who leverage their wisdom to enact meaningful change and support positive initiatives that inspire others to continue moving forward. Our leaders can take diverse shapes and sizes, from the heads of nations to local figures in our communities, such as teachers, mentors and family members.
