During residency, she served on the social determinants of health committee and, following her interest in the health of homeless communities, has written articles such as “There’s Only One Solution to Homelessness. So How Do We Get There?”. Earlier in her career, she served as the medical student representative to the North American chapter of the World Organization of Family Doctors and as the medical student representative to the Center for Global Health Initiatives with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Hayes has always approached health care with a holistic perspective. To this end, she was honored with induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the 2019 Costanza Community Impact Award. She hopes to continue providing holistic care for her community and advocating for improvements in our health care system for the rest of her career. During her formative years, Dr. Kiera Nevers Hayes’ fascination with parasites prompted her interest in the sciences. First pursuing a career in anthropology, she attended Beloit College, earning a Bachelor of Science in anthropology and biochemistry. Subsequently, she received a Master of Science in Control of Infectious Disease from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During school, she studied Malaria vaccines, health systems in South Africa and diagnostic tools for Leishmaniasis in India. She authored articles on her Malaria and Leishmaniasis findings and wrote her thesis on health care choices in South Africa. She was interested in the intersection between human behavior and human disease, but anthropology and disease control programs felt too distant from the direct patient care that she saw had a profound impact on communities. She completed an MD at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, followed by a residency in Family Medicine at Multicare Tacoma Family Medicine. She recently started working in a federally qualified health center outside of Tacoma, Washington, where she provides care for patients of all ages.
