Utley has cultivated a prosperous career in the music industry. For the length of his career, he has served a musician, producer and composer, specializing in keyboard instruments and working alongside a plethora of notable musicians throughout the music circuit. As part of his vocational journey, Mr. Utley has enjoyed many on-stage experiences, including numerous Broadway performances. During the early stages of his career, Mr. Utley worked with Atlantic Records in Miami, Florida, at Criteria Studios, assisting in backing songs for artists such as Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers and Jerry “Jeff” Walker. After his time working with Mr. Walker, he subsequently joined Jimmy Buffet in producing over 19 albums as a producer and coproducer, in addition to touring the country as a member of the Coral Reef Band. Mr. Utley currently serves as the band’s record producer and musical director. Prior to beginning his vocational journey, Mr. Utley pursued a formal education at the University of Arkansas, earning a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1969. Though he originally intended to continue his education and pursue a career in medicine, he was offered the opportunity to record alongside the Bill Black Combo in Memphis, Tennessee, during his senior year of college. This experience drastically changed Mr. Utley’s outlook, and thus, he turned toward a career in music. As part of his ongoing dedication to his profession, he also remains affiliated with the National Academy Recording Arts and SAG-AFTRA. Well-regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Utley was previously honored as an Arkansas Alumni Association Johnson Fellow in 2019 and was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers’ Hall of Fame in 2013. He largely attributes his success to the love and support of his wife, who has served as a constant source of motivation and inspiration. In the coming years, he looks forward to continuing his work in the music industry and creating new music that he hopes will help others in holding onto their youth.
