113 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION has maintained the title of professor emeritus at the college. In his other endeavors as an educator, Dr. Semon formerly served as a visiting professor at Amherst College between 1988 and 1990. He originally began his career in 1970, working as a research assistant at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Dr. Semon has provided several valuable contributions to the field of physics, including a new equation of state for liquid-gas systems near a critical point, a new application of the electromagnetic vector potential, and a new geometric model of velocity addition in special relativity. Furthermore, he has contributed numerous articles and papers to scientific journals and magazines, including the Physical Review, the American Journal of Physics — where he previously worked on the editorial advisory board — and the Journal of Mathematical Physics. Dr. Semon is also an active member of the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in physics and mathematics, magna cum laude, at Colgate University in 1971, he attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he achieved a Master of Science in physics in 1973 and a PhD in physics in 1976. Additionally, Dr. Semon completed coursework pertinent to his field abroad in London at Imperial College London between 1973 and 1974. Well-regarded for his professional accomplishments, Dr. Semon attributes much of his success to his curiosity, perseverance and the support of his colleagues and students. To this end, he is especially proud to have worked with senior thesis students, many of whom have gone on to offer important contributions in their respective fields. In the coming years, Dr. Semon looks forward to fully retiring while continuing to follow new research in the domains of physics and science. Dr. Mark D. Semon has over five decades of experience in the field of education, specializing in various areas of physics, such as relativity, quantum mechanics, and classical and quantum electrodynamics. He served as a professor of physics at Bates College from 1988 to 2017, having initially joined the institution in 1976 as an assistant professor. Since retiring in 2017, he MARK D.
