Dr. Brown serves as a board member and/or director for Promoting Hope Advisory, Region 15 Opioid Governance Council, Colorado Children’s Abuse Prevention, Colorado Association of Local Public Health Directors and CDPHE. Wellregarded for his accomplishments, he has lectured in Berlin, Garmisch, Frankfurt, Monte Carlo, Edinburgh and at many U.S. professional conferences. At the Association of Military Surgeons Conference in 2006, he received the Optometrist of the Year Award, but he is particularly proud of the acknowledgment by the U.S. Surgeon General for his part in introducing the U.S. military to the connection between traumatic brain injury and domestic violence. In the coming years, Dr. Brown hopes to develop new mobile public health service units in coordination with emergency management officers. Leveraging 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Clifford Douglas Brown has cultivated an accomplished career in the health care industry. Since 2020, he has served as the director of public health for Custer County, Colorado. Before taking on his current leadership role, he excelled as an optometric physician at an Indian Health Service Hospital in Arizona. Previously, he was the chief of eye clinics for the Central Alabama VA Hospital System, senior analyst/operations chief/medical administrator for the National Biosurveillance Integration Center, team lead for the National Incident Support Team C, and the U.S. Army’s Exceptional Family Member Department in Frankfurt at the 97th General Hospital. As part of his dedication to his profession, Dr. Brown has served several health care organizations, including the American and Canadian Diabetes Associations and the American Optometric Association. For 21 years, he served disabled military veterans as a Nordic instructor in the Disabled Winter Sports Clinics and Montana Governor’s TBI Advisory Council. After completing his BS and OD degrees, Dr. Brown entered the U.S. military/federal services, where his career included USAF Captain during Vietnam, Army Major during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and Captain (Director) in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
