229 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Rex L. Mahnensmith is a proven expert in health care. After three decades of specialist services in academic medicine settings, he currently serves as a primary care physician for DOCS Medical Group in Connecticut, opting out of retirement. Dr. Mahnensmith attended medical school at Yale University from 1973 to 1977, earning an MD with honors in 1977. He was recruited to remain for internal medicine and nephrology specialty training at Yale, which spanned from 1977 to 1984. Following advice and directives from master professors at Yale, Dr. Mahnensmith began his career in 1984 as an assistant professor of medicine at Duke University, then transitioned to Brown University, where he received several Teaching and Model Physician Awards over five years. He then received a strong recruitment call from Yale Medical Faculty in 1992 to return and serve as the specialist clinician and medical educator at the Yale School of Medicine. He rose from assistant professor of medicine to full professor of medicine with tenure during his 22 years of specialty services at Yale, also serving as clinical director of nephrology. He regularly taught medical students, physician associate students, medical residents, renal fellows and fellow faculty. He also engaged regularly in nephrology consultative care, plus the ongoing care of patients receiving maintenance dialysis. He retired from academic medicine in 2014 as professor emeritus at Yale. Dr. Mahnensmith says that his work efforts aimed first and foremost to serve others, providing care with caring and aiming to glorify God for His blessings on his life and family. In commemoration of his service accomplishments in medicine, Dr. Mahnensmith has also been honored with several accolades, including the Alpha Omega Alpha, the Berniker Award at Yale for Most Exemplary of the Oath of Hippocrates and Prayer of Maimonides, the Kushlan Award for Best Bedside Manner, 11 Teacher of the Year Awards, five Model Physician Awards, a Master of Nephrology Award from the American Society of Nephrology, the Rising Star Award from DaVita Healthcare, and local and regional medical director appointments to assure safe, high-quality care within dialysis clinics across many states.
