As such, he graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University with an OD and completed a residency in pediatric vision and vision training at the State University College of Optometry. Now possessing several decades of professional experience, Dr. Petito has served as an optometric physician at Petito Eyecare since 1989, through which he works directly with patients with low vision and patients who require complex contact lens designs. Prior to entering his current appointment, he served such institutions as the New York Eye and Ear Hospital, the SUNY Optometric Center of New York and Columbia University. While at Columbia University, Dr. Petito was a research scientist. He also excelled as an assistant professor and chief of primary care services at the State University of New York for six years. Dr. Petito is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a distinguished practitioner of the National Academies of Practice and a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. Outside of his primary profession, he has been a member of the screening and preventive care workgroup of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement and the federal relations committee of the American Optometric Association. To attest to his success, Dr. Petito was named the Optometrist of the Year by the Florida Optometric Association in 2022. In 2009, he was an inductee in the National Academies of Practice. Well-regarded for his scholarly output, he has contributed chapters to books and articles to professional journals, as well as served in editorial capacities for acclaimed publications. However, Dr. Petito is especially proud of advocating for health care infrastructure improvements through various medical organizations. Supported by a formative interest in medicine, Dr. G. Timothy Petito initially sought to enter the field of equine medicine and become a veterinarian. During his collegiate studies, he was encouraged by a friend to enter the field of optometry.
