101 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION With a keen focus on social and group work, Dr. Charles David Garvin has cultivated a career of excellence, with nearly 60 years of professional experience to his credit. A specialist in the fields of social work and education, he served as a professor of social work at the University of Michigan from 1965 to 2002. During his time at the institution, he maintained his interest in assisting individuals dealing with mental illnesses and substance abuse, and he developed a curriculum for students interested in similar areas of social work. Since retiring in 2002, Dr. Garvin has maintained the honorary title of professor emeritus at the university. Prior to entering his position as an educator, Dr. Garvin committed himself to social work for many years in his home of Chicago. To this end, he was a social worker with the Henry Booth House from 1948 to 1956 and with the Jewish Community Centers from 1956 to 1964. Adjacent to the onset of his career, he pursued a formal education, studying at the University of Chicago and ultimately achieving a PhD in 1968. In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Garvin honorably served in the United States Army between 1952 and 1954, earning the rank of corporal. Ever dedicated to his profession, Dr. Garvin remains affiliated with several organizations, including the American Sociological Association and the National Association of Social Workers. Well-regarded for his scholarly output as well, he has authored and co-authored several books, including “Socially Just Practice in Groups: A Social Work Perspective” in 2019, “Social Work in Contemporary Society” in 1992, and “The Work Incentive Experience” in 1974. To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Garvin has been honored with several accolades over the course of his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Social Work Education in 2012. Attributing much of his success to his intellectual curiosity and drive to contribute new knowledge to his field, he is particularly proud to have founded the International Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups.
