188 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Leveraging nearly seven decades of professional experience, James L. Tanner has cultivated a career of excellence in military service. Coming from a lineage in the field of the armed forces, he honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1981, achieving the rank of colonel prior to retiring. Since then, he has operated as the director of operations for the Office of Personnel Management in the state of Oklahoma. In recognition of his dedicated service in the military, Mr. Tanner was honored with a Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Crosses and a Bronze Star. As part of his vocational journey, Mr. Tanner pursued a formal education, beginning with his time at Wichita State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration in 1955. During his time in the Air Force, he subsequently continued his studies at Auburn University, receiving a Master of Business Administration in 1975. Ever committed to his professional endeavors and fellow service members, Mr. Tanner remains affiliated with Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion. From an early age, Mr. Tanner naturally gravitated towards a career in the armed forces, with his father having fought in World War II and his grandfather having fought in the Spanish-American War. In light of his accomplished career, Mr. Tanner largely attributes his success to his dedicated work ethic, as taught by his forbearers. While his career has been filled with a plethora of professional achievements, Mr. Tanner is especially proud to have been married to his late wife, Norma, for 70 years, as well as to have joined her in raising their three wonderful children. Looking toward the future, he intends to experience the continued success of his career in future endeavors related to his experience in the Office of Personnel Management and spend time with his family.
