Ms. Lowell opened her own studio/ad agency in New York in 1974. In 1975, her painting was selected for “The Year of the Woman” exhibit at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Her early artwork earned her the label of NYC Feminist Artist. In 2011, she was invited to be included in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Feminist Art Base on the Brooklyn Museum website. After moving to Asheville, North Carolina, in 1996, Ms. Lowell began performing poetry at open mics. The response was so favorable, she continues to do this to this day. In 2001, a poem came through her; this was the first time she personified trees and nature and was the seed to the artwork that would follow in 2004 when she began her current series of paintings. There are over 50 paintings and 50 poems in this series. In 2005, she self-published a book, “This is the Land of Two Suns.” Her intention now is to create a permanent exhibit of this entire series, titled “Inside the World of Gaea – Musings & Memories.” After graduating from Pratt Institute with a BFA in advertising design and visual communications, Ms. Lowell worked in New York. Her first position was as an assistant art director at Sudler & Hennessey. She then served Vanderpool & Siegel as one of two graphic designers and the creative director. She also served as an assistant art director and full art director at Benton & Bowles. She left to become an independent graphic designer to balance her time between working for clients and creating her personal artwork. Ms. Lowell’s experience working in both advertising and graphic design, as well as the visual arts, has served her and her clients well. Recognized in the commercial art and visual art worlds, her work has received regional and national awards, honorable mentions and merit awards. With over five decades of experience, Shelley Lowell has cultivated two fulfilling careers in art. One career is as a graphic designer/art director, where she specialized in creating branding, sales literature, packaging and books. Her second career is as an artist and poet.
