Furthermore, Dr. Powers continues to serve the university as an endowed chair, a position she accepted in 2017. Dr. Powers originally joined the university in 2007, teaching as a professor of electrical and computer engineering. Additionally, she was appointed as the Thomas R. Brown chair of engineering, a position she maintained until her retirement in 2021. She also previously worked as the director of the National Center for the Design of Molecular Function and as a professor of electrical, biological and irrigation engineering at Utah State University from 1991 to 2006. At the onset of her career, Dr. Powers joined the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as an adjunct professor in 1978, and she continued teaching there until 2000. Prior to embarking on her vocational journey, she cultivated her own higher education, beginning with her time at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she earned a BS in physics and chemistry in 1970. Dr. Powers subsequently attended Harvard University and achieved an MA in physics in 1972 and a PhD in biophysics in 1976. Well-regarded for her practiced expertise, Dr. Powers has had numerous opportunities to contribute papers to scholarly journals and magazines, including the Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering, in which she appeared from 2002 to 2005. To commemorate her accomplishments, she has been honored with several accolades over the course of her career, including the Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology from the state of Utah in 1994.
