110 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Prior to embarking on her vocational journey, Dr. Preston cultivated her own higher education, beginning with her time at Alabama State University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1965. She subsequently continued her studies at the University of South Alabama and earned a Master of Education in counseling in 1972. Dr. Preston ultimately concluded her collegiate career at The University of Alabama after achieving a Doctor of Education in 1984. To commemorate her achievements, Dr. Preston has been honored with several accolades over the course of her career, including recognition as Educator of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa (PDK International) in 2003 and as a Distinguished Faculty by Compton College and El Camino College in 2015. Furthermore, Dr. Preston is particularly proud to have been the first African American woman to serve as the president of the Alabama Counseling Association in 2014. Leveraging over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Essie French Preston is a proven leader in the field of education. Specializing in curriculum creation and student counseling, she has served as a counselor at Compton College since 2019, having originally joined the school at the onset of her career as an associate dean. During her time with the institution, she also operated as a member of the registrar in 1986 and as the vice president of student affairs for 20 years. Much of Dr. Preston’s current work involves assisting students in the nursing program to ensure their transcripts are refined, and they can meet their academic goals. During her tenure in the field, Dr. Preston also worked with El Camino College for 13 years and with Stillman College for 14 years. Furthermore, she remains affiliated with several organizations. In addition to currently serving as the vice president of the MidCities Credit Union in Compton, California, she is also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
