214 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Susan K.F. Kau has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of nursing, drawing upon over four decades of professional experience. Since the onset of her career in 1982, she has thrived as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff nurse at the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu, Hawaii. As part of her dedication to her profession, Ms. Kau also maintains her affiliation with several industry-related organizations, including the Hawaii Nurses Association, the Academy of Neonatal Nurses and the National Association of Neonatal Nursing. Adjacent to her primary duties, Ms. Kau remains active as a civic-minded citizen in her community, regularly participating with Caring for Hawaii Neonates. Additionally, she participated in a medical mission trip to India in 2017. In her scholarly efforts, she is a contributing author to “The Late PreTerm Infant” and “Neonatal Nursing: A Global Perspective” and revised/edited chapters in the sixth edition of “Comprehensive Neonatal Nursing Care.” Prior to embarking on her vocational journey, Ms. Kau pursued a higher education, achieving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Hawaii in 1982. In addition to her academic credentials, she was formally certified in neonatal intensive care nursing by the National Certification Corporation in 1988. To commemorate her accomplishments in the field, Ms. Kau has been honored with several accolades, most recently including an award from the Royal Order of Queen Julia Kapi’olani by the Hawaiian Civic Club/ Caring for Hawaii Neonates at the (ALIGNN) International Conference in 2022. Furthermore, in 2016, she was recognized as the Nurse of the Year by Caring for Hawaii Neonates. Ms. Kau constantly strives to live by her motto of “positivity, flexibility and resilience.” She also adds, “It isn’t about what you achieve in life. Rather, it is important to consider the journey you take to get there. Learn to appreciate a patient’s experiences and that you are privileged to be a part of them. It’s all about your patients.” In accounting for her achievements, Ms. Kau is particularly proud of all her work helping her many patients and serving as a patient advocate.
