Serving for 23 years with the World Health Organization (WHO) assigned in Malaysia, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and Samoa, Dr. Palmer was at the forefront of the implementation of new strategies to control and eliminate malaria, including some of the first field trials of insecticide-treated bed nets, the promotion of community malaria volunteers, improving access to diagnosis and treatment, training of health workers and building effective national malaria control strategies. Since 2012, Dr. Palmer has also served as an affiliate graduate faculty at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, where he specializes in tropical diseases and is involved with mentoring students in the university’s PhD program. Dr. Palmer pursued his formal education before commencing his career in 1982. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in zoology at the University of Connecticut, he continued his studies at Yale University. He achieved a Master of Public Health in medical entomology and virology in 1979. In conclusion of his collegiate career, Dr. Palmer ultimately achieved a PhD in tropical medicine at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in 1982. In light of his fulfilling career, Dr. Palmer has largely attributed his success to the guidance of his mentors. He, in turn, has mentored numerous young professionals that have assumed key roles in the effort to achieve global malaria elimination. He is particularly proud of all the work he accomplished while working with WHO. In retirement, Dr. Palmer intends to continue promoting malaria elimination activities in the Asia/Pacific. B olstered by over four decades of professional experience, Dr. Kevin L. Palmer has cultivated a fulfilling career in global public health, international consulting and academia.
