313 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine PROFESSOR OF RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION York College of Pennsylvania York, PA SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Millennium Magazine Featured Listee DIRECTOR E and L Development Foundation Brandon, MS Millennium Magazine Featured Listee MELBAH MCAFEE SMITH Leveraging more than five decades of professional experience, Melbah McAfee Smith has worked tirelessly to organize and strengthen cooperative businesses within the southern region of the U.S. She currently serves as the director of the E and L Development Foundation, which assists in the agricultural development of communities and small farmers throughout her local region in the state of Mississippi. Ms. McAfee Smith began her career in 1972, working with the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund in Epes, Alabama. After moving back to Mississippi, she continued her work with rural communities as part of the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives, Mississippi Center for Cooperative Development and the Coalition for a Prosperous Mississippi, serving as director. In 2009, Ms. McAfee Smith was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame in Washington, DC. Having pursued a formal education as well, she holds an MBA from Tuskegee University. Attributing much of her success to the love and support of her parents, she is especially proud to have contributed to the agricultural improvements of small and minority farmers within the state of Mississippi throughout her career. Dr. Erec S. Smith has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of education, specializing in rhetorical theory, civic life and professional cultures. Since 2013, he has served as a professor of rhetoric and composition at the York College of Pennsylvania. Wellregarded for his proven expertise, he applies effective communication strategies and his own teaching methodology, which he calls “Mutual Persuasion,” to instill the importance of civic advocacy in his students. Likewise, Dr. Smith has been commended in his roles as the cofounder, president and co-editor of Free Black Thought. In 2023, he joined the Cato Institute as a visiting scholar. In his own academic pursuits, Dr. Smith ultimately achieved an MA in American literature in 1998 and a PhD in rhetoric in 2003 while attending the University of Illinois Chicago. As part of his creative endeavors, he has authored and edited several books pertaining to his field, including his recent 2022 publication, “The Lure of Disempowerment: Reclaiming Agency in the Age of CRT.” To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Smith was honored with the Hero of Intellectual Freedom Award from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni in 2022.
