40 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT independently as a writer and editor since 2003, publishing opinion pieces in Seattle newspapers and the Boston Globe. She has authored awardwinning Christian education books, including “Total Praise!: An Orientation to Black Baptist Belief and Worship” and “Christian Education in the African American Church: A Guide for Teaching Truth.” Her illustrated children’s book, “All About Grief,” will be published in 2024. Dr. McKinney started Cedar River Creative Productions in 2021, a nonprofit that coordinates her creative work and social media platforms and supports activist artists. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she held virtual fundraisers for out-ofwork actors, dancers, artists, musicians, opera singers and storytellers. In 2022, she created P3: The Poetry and Painting Project. In 2023, she collaborated with musicians who performed her songs. For Dr. McKinney, this blend of artistry, social activism, collaboration and community engagement is the perfect blend of her talents. Dr. Lora-Ellen McKinney spent her early career as a pediatric psychologist, medical school clinical professor, clinic director, and medical and psychological services consultant. As witness to the challenges to child development and family functioning caused by crack cocaine in New York’s public health clinics, she started the Clearinghouse for Drug Exposed Children at UCSF Medical Center. Her model was adopted by the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services and Maternal and Children Health, receiving a Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship. She is also proud of being a Salzburg Seminar Fellow, tasked with designing workable solutions to the IsraeliPalestine and Serbia-Croatian conflicts. Dr. McKinney earned a BA from Vassar College and an MS in developmental psychology and PhD in child psychology from the University of Washington, completing a clinical internship through Harvard Hospital Systems. Receiving an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School, she was hired as deputy to Washington, D.C.’s chief medical officer. She headed the city’s community health clinics and served as strategic planning officer at DC General Hospital. She worked at public health think tanks, heading national research programs in community health and crafting federal family health legislation and research protocols. Dr. McKinney has served as a docent at the Seattle Art Museum since 2007 and evaluated medical research applications for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center from 2005 to 2019.
