77 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION rising to several key leadership positions during her tenure. From 1979 to 1984, she was the vice president of institutional advancement, and from 1984 to 2006, she served as the university’s president. Though retired, Dr. Dunn maintains the status of president emerita and works with top donors in the university’s Advancement Office. Dr. Dunn specialized in academic leadership, strategic planning, interpersonal relations and curriculum development. Likewise, she played key roles in various fundraising events for the university and other associated organizations. As part of her dedication to her profession, Dr. Dunn is affiliated with the university’s Association of Fundraising Professionals. Adjacent to her primary duties in the field, Dr. Dunn tirelessly served her community as a civicminded citizen. Notably, she was the first woman to serve as the chair of the Iowa Department of Transportation for 12 years. Furthermore, she thrived as a board member of the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, the American Trust and Savings Bank, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities. In her own academic pursuits, Dr. Dunn achieved a PhD in curriculum development in higher education at Arizona State University in 1978. To commemorate her accomplishments, she has been honored with numerous accolades, most recently including a Leadership Award from the Crescent Community Health Center in 2020. She was also named one of the 50 Most Influential Iowans by the Des Moines Register in 2000. Attributing much of her success to her faith and education, Dr. Dunn is particularly proud to have overcome many challenges during her time in the field, most notably, the massive fire that destroyed the entire center of the campus just 111 days after assuming the presidency and proven herself as a gifted leader. Drawing upon over four decades of experience, Dr. Catherine Dunn, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of education.
