84 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Dr. Patrick J. O’Brien is a proven leader in the field of education, having cultivated several decades of practiced expertise. Now retired, he previously served as a senior lecturer in the Department of French and Italian at the University of Minnesota. During his tenure with the academic institution, he was also an administrator in the undergraduate advising office. Furthermore, Dr. O’Brien previously excelled as the chair of the university’s Scholastic Appeals Committee. Adjacent to his primary vocational pursuits, Dr. O’Brien has remained active as a civic-minded citizen. During his time at the University of Minnesota, he served as the director of communications for the regional office of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He has also volunteered as an editor for the donor publication of the Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. As part of his dedication to his profession, Dr. O’Brien is a former member of the Modern Language Association. In his own academic endeavors, he pursued higher education, achieving a Master of Arts in French at Loyola University Chicago in 1976 and a PhD in French at the University of Minnesota in 1985. To commemorate his accomplishments in the field, Dr. O’Brien was previously honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award. In light of his fulfilling career, Dr. O’Brien has largely attributed his success to his willingness to learn, having placed a value on trying new things and taking risks. Likewise, in accounting for his achievements, he is particularly proud to have been honored for his excellence as a teacher. He is further grateful to have had the chance to formally address the board of directors at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
