He also wrote “The Only Authentic Book of Persuasion: The Agenda-Spin Method” in 2011 and its subsequent seven editions until 2022. He was an editor for USA Today Magazine between 1985 and 2022 and has published articles and reviews in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun, The New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Moreover, he has appeared on local and national media as an analyst for Fox News, CNN, CBS Radio and ABS Radio, as well as on “The Phil Donahue Show” and “Larry King Live.” He has provided political commentary for other national television and radio outlets and served on Towson University’s University Senate for 41 years. Earlier, Dr. Vatz was an instructor at Pennsylvania State University and North Carolina State University. During this time, he earned a BA in sociology in 1969, MA in rhetoric and communication in 1970, and PhD in rhetoric and communication in 1976, all from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Vatz has sponsored the Richard E. Vatz Agenda-Spin Persuasion Award for the Eastern Communication Association and the Richard E. Vatz Best Debater Award Endowment at Towson University. In 2022, the university’s Van Bokkelen Hall lecture hall was renamed the Richard E. Vatz Auditorium. He was honored with Towson University’s first Teacher of the Year Award in 2002 and four Outstanding Teaching Grants, the most of any faculty member at Towson. Likewise, the Eastern Communication Association gave him the Teaching Fellow Award in 2003, and Maryland Governors Robert Ehrlich and Larry Hogan gave him Governor’s Citations for Achievements in Higher Education and Service in 2004 and 2022. He was awarded Towson’s highest honor in 2004, the President’s Award for Distinguished Service. Dr. Richard E. Vatz is a distinguished figure in academia, accruing over 50 years of experience prior to retiring in 2023. Joining Towson University in 1974 as an assistant professor, he was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and full professor in 1989. In 2023, he earned the title of professor emeritus.
