DAY FOUNDER, PRESIDENT Bugles Across America Berwyn, IL With more than five decades of professional experience to his credit, Tom J. Day has cultivated a fulfilling career as a multifaceted professional. Chief among his current entrepreneurial and civic-minded endeavors is his nonprofit organization, Bugles Across America, where he has served as the founder and president since 2000. The group, currently consisting of over 5,000 military veterans and musicians, remains dedicated to aiding fellow veterans and their families by volunteering to play “Taps” on the bugle for veteran funeral services. Since its inception, Bugles Across America has provided services for over 126,000 military funerals. Mr. Day originally learned to play “Taps” on the bugle before the age of 10, and he gave his first public performance during the reburial of a Civil War veteran in Chicago. Since then, he has remained dedicated to playing music and military service, both of which have played an impactful role in his extensive career. He originally began his vocational journey by participating in the Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) toward the end of his high school career. After graduating, Mr. Day formally enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for eight years, during which time he rose to become a platoon leader at the boot camp on Parris Island in South Carolina. Mr. Day subsequently continued his military career by serving in the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. In addition to spending 12 years with the Air Force, he later rejoined the JROTC as a cadet instructor for 10 years. Likewise, he went on to enlist and serve in the United States Navy for four years. He ultimately rejoined the Marine Corps for an additional eight years, during which time he ultimately achieved the rank of sergeant. Hailing from a military family, Mr. Day naturally gravitated toward a career in military service, with his father having also been celebrated as a veteran of the Air Force. In his other professional and civic pursuits, Mr. Day operated as an officiant for Flag Day ceremonies at the Daley Center in Chicago during 1996.
