186 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Jorge L. Flores has cultivated a fulfilling career as a multifaceted professional, with more than 45 years of professional experience to his credit. Now retired from full-time work, he previously excelled as the port director for the United States Customs and Border Protection from 1970 to 2001. Prior to entering his leadership role, he began his work with the organization as an inspector and later as a supervisor. As part of his duties in the field, Mr. Flores enforced international laws pertaining to United States borders, participating in many operations to halt the smuggling of narcotics. Adjacent to his primary duties, Mr. Flores also excelled as the lead real estate broker and principal owner of his own real estate firm from 1980 to 2013. He also previously worked as a mathematics teacher between 1968 and 1970 at Brownsville High School in Texas. As part of his civic-minded endeavors, Mr. Flores maintained his position as the president of the Mr. Amigo Association in 2008. He has also regularly participated in events hosted by the Sembradores Unidos Association. Prior to embarking on his vocational journey, Mr. Flores pursued a formal education. After graduating from La Joya High School in 1965, he attended the University of Texas-Pan American (now a part of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and achieved a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and Spanish in 1968. Outside of his core professional interests, Mr. Flores is equally well-versed as a nature and wildlife explorer. Mr. Flores has been honored with several accolades over the course of his career. Most notably, he previously received the Hammer Award from the National Performance Review Board and was named the Manager of the Year for the Southwest Region in the 1990s. Attributing his success to the guidance of his parents and his innate leadership skills, Mr. Flores is particularly proud to have served as the port director in Norfolk, Virginia, where he managed imports worth more than $350 billion each year.
