While teaching, Dr. Dempsey maintained a private practice that concentrated on psychotherapy and medication prescription. Dr. Dempsey has focused her efforts on psychiatry-mental health nursing, having advanced from a staff nurse to board-certified clinical specialist and advanced practice nurse prescriber, and was recognized as the first master’s prepared psychiatric mental health nurse to work for the City of Chicago Outpatient Mental Health Centers. She also served as a team leader, director of nursing and hospital administrator on duty at various times and facilities. As part of her dedication to her profession, Dr. Dempsey has published articles pertaining to nursing, with one study in Nursing Science Quarterly being selected by Sage Publication for the 2008 Best Paper Award. Of the many awards and recognitions she has received, she is particularly grateful for the moment one of her patients looked into her eyes and told her, “You made a difference in my life.” Dr. Dempsey began her own studies at the St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center School of Nursing, where she earned a diploma to become a registered nurse. She subsequently continued her studies at DePaul University and received a BSN. After receiving an MSN at St. Xavier University, she concluded her academic career at Loyola University Chicago, where she achieved a PhD in philosophy and nursing. Outside of her vocational interests, Dr. Dempsey has served her community as a member, then president, of the Oshkosh Division of the Mental Health Association. She is particularly well-regarded for her volunteer service with women’s groups and societies, having conducted presentations to laypeople and professionals. Possessing nearly five decades of experience, Dr. Leona F. Dempsey has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of nursing. Specializing in the four main areas of nursing – clinical practice, nursing leadership, nursing education and research – she most recently served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh College of Nursing from 1996 to 2010.
