In 1995, he became a teacher for Elderhostel, spending 17 years hosting classes about the world of Hollywood he covered all those years. In 1981, Mr. Stanley created Creatures at Large Press, publishing the first of six editions of his famed “Creature Features Movie Guide” series. He self-published the third and fourth editions, featuring thousands of sci-fi and horror movie reviews, while the second, fifth and sixth editions were done by New York paperback publishers. His press also published “I Was a TV Horror Host” in 2007 and “The Gang That Shot Up Hollywood” in 2011, the latter featuring his meetings with Robert Mitchum, Jimmy Stewart, Jane Russell and many more in the film noir genre. Mr. Stanley co-wrote with Chronicle artist Kenn Davis the screenplay “Nightmare in Blood,” which was released in 1978 in theaters across America. He also co-wrote with David the 1976 private eye thriller “The Dark Side” and 1980’s “Bogart ’48,” the latter being reprinted in 2012 by Ramble House Press. Books done by other publishers included the popular 1976 fantasy paperback “World War III,” followed by the 1977 “Viva Knievel.” BearManor Media released two volumes of his interviews with famous comics, “Comedy Icons of the 20th Century,” in 2016. Two books Mr. Stanley edited and published through Creatures at Large Press were Robert Bloch’s “Lost in Time and Space with Lefty Feep” in 1987 and John Mitchum’s “Them Ornery Mitchum Boys” in 1989. His latest book, the 2022 “The Career That Dripped with Horror,” highlighted his interviews with famous horror and sci-fi stars. Mr. Stanley attributes his success to his father, who fought on the island of Luzon in 1945 and provided Mr. Stanley with his love for movies and writing. Today, he feels he has achieved most of his professional goals. Now retired, John William Stanley started out as an entertainment writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, becoming a specialist in interviewing movie and television stars from the 1960s to 19902.
