80 EDUCATION As part of her vocational journey, Ms. Greenland cultivated her own formal education at California State University, Los Angeles. During her time at the institution, she achieved a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in reading. In addition to her academic credentials, Ms. Greenland was recognized as a reading specialist by her alma mater, and she holds an elementary school teaching certification from California State University, Northridge. In light of her fulfilling career, Ms. Greenland has largely attributed her success to her curiosity and the guidance of her mentors. In accounting for her accomplishments, she is particularly proud to have published her book and developed a strong understanding of African American culture. In the coming years, she hopes to continue writing about her experiences and encouraging others to venture out and explore the culture of others. With over five decades of professional experience to her credit, Sonya Reese Greenland is a proven leader in the field of education. Now retired, she previously served as an educator for Life Long Learning in Los Angeles, California, from 2003 to 2013. Furthermore, for 40 years of her career, she excelled as an elementary school teacher at the Los Angeles Unified School District. Throughout her time in the field, Ms. Greenland specialized in education pertaining to property management, world literature and other cultures. As part of her retirement, Ms. Greenland remains active as a writer and historical preservationist. She currently serves as the vice president of the Venice Historical Society in California. In her creative endeavors, she authored “The Wizard of Venice,” which describes the life of her grandfather, Arthur L. Reese, who played an instrumental role in establishing a thriving community for Black individuals in Venice. Throughout her career, Ms. Greenland has strived to continue her grandfather’s legacy by performing as a staunch advocate for civic advocacy in her region.
