As part of his duties with the biomedical sciences research and education institution, Dr. Wilson guides various classes, in addition to managing his own laboratory for biomedical research on infectious diseases. Furthermore, he is the chair of the department of integrative structural and computational biology. In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Wilson previously served as the director of the Joint Center for Structural Genomics, as part of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, from 2000 to 2016. Furthermore, in his scholarly pursuits, he has excelled as an advisory editor for the Journal of Experimental Medicine since 1998, having also held a similar editorial role with the Journal of Molecular Biology between 1994 and 2013. As part of his efforts with the National Institutes of Health, he worked with the division of biophysics, biomedical technology and computational biosciences from 1998 to 2002. Before beginning his vocational journey, Dr. Wilson pursued his own higher education, originally earning a BS in biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1971. He subsequently continued his studies at Oxford University and achieved a PhD in molecular biophysics in 1976. In conclusion of his collegiate career, Dr. Wilson received a DSc in biological sciences from Oxford University in 2000. Well-regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Wilson has been honored with numerous accolades, including the first Bernie Gilula Award for Faculty Excellence from The Scripps Research Institute in 2010. Likewise, he was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2008. Attributing much of his success to his extensive training and passion for his profession, Dr. Wilson is particularly proud of his work immediately following his postdoctoral studies, during which time he conducted extensive research on the influenza virus. With over four decades of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Ian A. Wilson has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of education.
