Dr. West earned an MD at Meharry Medical College in 1997 and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in 2001. Shortly thereafter, she began her career at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where her focus on the underserved population echoed the mission of her alma mater. In addition, she became a consulting physician at the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Student Health Center, where she would remain for eight years. During this time, she started a private practice as the Owner and President of Essential Health, P.C. Through the 2010s, Dr. West was affiliated with Premier OBGYN LLC, South Huntsville OBGYN and Huntsville Hospital. During her tenure, she achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first African American female medical director of the Huntsville Hospital Obstetric Emergency Department, overseeing both inpatient OB hospitalists and the outpatient clinic. Since 2023, she has been in a period of transition, preparing for the launch of her new private practice, Whitney West, M.D., P.C., and completing her fellowship in integrative medicine. As part of her commitment to serving her patients and advocating for her profession, Dr. West is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, and a member of the National Medical Association. She credits her success to her values and personal code of ethics, emphasizing that they have acted as a compass throughout her career. Dr. West underscores the need for medical professionals to treat patients with empathy and compassion and strives to treat her patients with the same care that she hopes to receive from other doctors.
