515 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. David Read Johnson is a licensed clinical psychologist, professor, and the chief executive officer of Miss Kendra Programs. The company is well-regarded for offering ageappropriate, trauma-informed stress reduction and emotional wellness curricula for K-12 students. Built on more than 45 years of his work in trauma and arts-based treatment, Dr. Johnson’s program incorporates classroom activities, a letter-writing program, and small celebrations of student strength. These initiatives all help to create strong school communities and give participants the opportunity to connect with teachers and staff. Dr. Johnson holds a BA from Yale University, where he graduated magna cum laude with concentrations in psychology and drama. During the time of his studies, he developed an interest in the possibilities of using theater and the arts in therapeutic settings, and in 1980, he earned a PhD in clinical psychology exploring this work. Dr. Johnson then spent more than a decade working with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center as a mental health clinician and administrator, where his work focused on services for patients with complex trauma, PTSD, substance use disorders and dual diagnoses. He was named director of outpatient services at the National Center for PTSD in 1994 and remains co-director of the center. In addition to his clinical work and school-based interventions, Dr. Johnson is a longtime faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and he has been an associate clinical professor at the Yale University School of Medicine since 1997. Furthermore, he is the president of the Foundation for the Arts and Trauma. Dr. Johnson has also written nine books on topics in drama and arts therapy, contributed to dozens of scholarly articles, and sits on the editorial boards of numerous professional journals. To commemorate his contributions to trauma care and drama therapy, he has been presented with some of the field’s top honors, including the VA Medical Center’s Hand and Heart Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Drama Therapy.
