Mitchell boasts over five decades of success in nursing and education. She began her career at Graceland University, graduating with a BSN in 1973. Continuing her education at the University of Texas, she received an MSN in 1976. During her studies, a nursing director emphasized the need to remain involved in the education of future nurses, stating that as medical professionals, they had a duty to the public and to their community. Throughout her subsequent career, Dr. Mitchell has accordingly made her decisions with the greater community in mind. In 1979, Dr. Mitchell began working at El Paso Community College as an instructor of nursing. Continuing her work at the college, she later became the acting division chairman of health occupations in 1985, the division dean in 1998 and the dean of health occupations in 1999. From 1985 to 2003, she served as the school’s director of nursing, leading the education of future nursing professionals. Returning to her own academic pursuits during this time, Dr. Mitchell ultimately achieved an EdD in educational administration at New Mexico State University in 1996. Remaining at El Paso Community College’s Rio Grande campus in 2000, Dr. Mitchell became the dean of health occupations, math and science, a position she served in for eight years. While in that position as the dean of health career technology, education, math and science, she also served as an interim associate vice president. Since 2019, she has excelled as the associate vice president for instruction and student success. Continuing to honor the words of her former nursing director, Dr. Mitchell continues to help others in her community in a multitude of ways. Notably, she worked as a nurse practitioner in obstetrics-gynecology at Planned Parenthood in El Paso from 1981 to 1986 and served on the Planned Parenthood medical committee until 1998. She has otherwise been a member of various community committees, including a current position on the steering committee for the West Texas Medical Reserve Corps.
