199 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION Leveraging over 30 years of experience, Dr. Elizabeth K. Hawthorne has earned distinction as a full professor and graduate program director of cybersecurity at Northeastern University in Arlington, Virginia. Having previously held similar roles in her field, she was an online lecturer and graduate program director of cybersecurity at Rider University and a professor at Union College, teaching computer science and cybersecurity courses for over two decades. She also was an adjunct professor of cybersecurity at the University of Maryland Global Campus from 2005 to 2012. At the onset of her career, she became the director of instructional technologies at Lehigh Carbon Community College in 1991. Well-regarded as a trusted resource in computer science and cybersecurity, Dr. Hawthorne has over 100 publications and presentations available through the digital library of the Association for Computing Machinery; she served as a co-chair for the organization’s education board. She also served as a director on the Computer Science Accreditation Board and a program evaluator for ABET. She has distinguished herself for over 15 years as a principal investigator on numerous National Science Foundation grants. Likewise, she is a member of several relevant organizations, including the IEEE Computer Society and the IEEE Women in Engineering. Beginning her own studies at Rider University, Dr. Hawthorne attained a BS in decision science and computers in 1985, as well as an MS in management information systems from Kean University in 1990. She ultimately achieved a PhD in computer information systems at Nova Southeastern University in 2006. Following her postdoctoral fellowship in digital forensics and cyber investigations at the University of Maryland, she earned several industry credentials, including as a certified information systems security professional and a certified forensics computer examiner. In light of her accomplished career, Dr. Hawthorne is particularly proud to have served as a champion for women in the cybersecurity profession. In honor of her work, she was bestowed with the first-ever Advocacy Award by the Women in Cybersecurity organization in 2023. Looking ahead, she aspires to continue advocating for women in cybersecurity and to make a positive difference in society at large. ELIZABETH K.
