In its first year of operation, the business generated a remarkable milestone of $1 million in annual revenue. Mr. Rought has been well-regarded for his professional achievements, with Green Shield having recently been recognized as the Deck Specialist of the Year by Deck Specialists Magazine in 2023. He led his company to over $30 million in revenue in 2023. He attributes his fast growth in the decking market to his industryfirst, direct-to-manufacturer relationships, which allow him to offer customers tremendous value versus other contractors who rely on two-step distribution channels. Looking to the future, Mr. Rought envisions the firm expanding its presence to 10 states by offering its award-winning decks at an unbeatable price for consumers. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Green Shield Deck Builders Kentwood, MI Joshua Schmitt is a contractor and entrepreneur who has been building clients’ dream homes since 2017 as the owner of Big Pine Construction. He discovered his passion for building at a young age, inspired by his father and youth mentor’s work as specialized contractors, and he began working in the field in college. He became a full-time carpenter in 2005 and spent the next 12 years developing a comprehensive knowledge of the intricacies of high-end homebuilding and project management, including work as a log home builder, supervisor and custom home builder. Big Pine Construction focuses on custom luxury homes and offers timber framing and ICF home services. The company has been nominated for the Best of the Black Hills and boasts a strong portfolio, including a 4,000-square-foot West Coast-style lodge. Mr. Schmitt prides himself on his commitment to craftsmanship and service and credits his success to his faith, family and team. He also enjoys an adventurous life with his wife, Karie, and their two daughters, Jeyda and Samara.
