In the coming years, Mr. Newman plans to increase visibility for the Gas Workers Union Local 18007 by taking leading roles in citywide labor initiatives and volunteerism, and he hopes to elevate membership and engagement to record levels. Outside of his work for the union, Mr. Newman is a recording engineer, the owner of an independent music label, and a member of the Recording Academy - Chicago Grammy Chapter. He is a fierce advocate for musicians and artists, having brought the same fervor and skills that he relies on as a union leader to foster collaboration between musicians and city officials. He recently forged a partnership with the Chicago Federation of Musicians and maintains a working relationship with several local artists. Mr. Newman also enjoys pursuing international travel, and he looks forward to expanding his creative reach with a planned recording session at the famed Abbey Road studio in London. For more than 30 years, Arnell Newman has been a model of leadership and positive change as a member of the Gas Workers Union Local 18007, culminating in his 2023 nomination as the organization’s first African American president. He entered the union in 1991 as a laborer after a friend suggested he apply, and he quickly became a part of its distribution operations team. Mr. Newman was named a union steward in 2014 and continued to develop as a leader and an advocate for other members, becoming a recording secretary in 2016 and a vice president and treasurer in 2018. As president of the Gas Workers Union Local 18007, Mr. Newman is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the safety of the union’s members, forecasting and investing in development opportunities for members and their families, and building strong partnerships with state and city officials, business leaders, and other stakeholders.
