519 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Piroska Cornell Kopar developed the keen ability to adapt to new situations after her family immigrated to the United States from Hungary when she was 17 years old. Following her fascination with ethics, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at St. John’s College, where she conducted research that sparked an interest in medicine. She received a scholarship to attend medical school at Emory University and developed a passion for surgery, completing a residency and surgical training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. During a threeyear academic break, Dr. Kopar explored methods of merging her interests in philosophy and surgery; she subsequently completed a medical ethics fellowship at Harvard University, where she committed to developing surgical ethics curricula. After returning to Dartmouth-Hitchcock and completing a cardiac surgery fellowship, Dr. Kopar became a trauma and acute surgery fellow at Yale University, where she taught surgical ethics to residents. Given her background and expertise, Washington University in St. Louis recruited her in 2018 to lead the Surgical Ethics Center. In 2023, she completed an executive MBA at the institution, and she has since entered the Oxford University master’s program in ethics, a degree she hopes to follow with a PhD. Dr. Kopar considers her most notable achievement to be the creation of the ethics fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, where she helped develop the Center for Humanism Ethics and Surgical Specialties (CHESS). Dr. Ira Kodner, the founder of the school’s ethics program, was instrumental in steering Dr. Kopar to join the university and propel the ethics program to what it is today. In 2021, Dr. Kopar founded EthiLine, a virtual clinical ethics consultation service. With EthiLine, her goal is to establish a natural presence in the industry, given the significant demand for virtual medical services. Additionally, she hopes to build a national ethics committee of credentialed professionals to determine standard procedures and prerequisites to determine what constitutes ethics expertise.
