By 1991, his farm was 100% certified organic. Between 1983 and 2015, Dr. Quinn started several other businesses in order to elevate farms and communities in rural Montana. These include Montana Flour & Grains Inc., an organic whole grain and flour company; Kamut International, for the promotion and research of Kamut ancient wheat; Wind Park Solutions, a developer of Montana’s first wind farm; The Oil Barn, which develops organic vegetable oil; and Big Sandy Organics, which creates organic ancient wheat Kamut snacks. Dr. Quinn also led a research team to study why those with sensitivities to modern wheat could eat Kamut ancient wheat without difficulty. Thirty-six peer-reviewed articles have been published in leading journals comparing modern and ancient wheat in human clinical trials. As a result of these studies and the great taste and texture of the products, the Kamut brand has achieved international recognition. Dr. Quinn attributes his success to cultivating positive partnerships. His approach to business is “everybody wins” and that success should be mutually beneficial; therefore, he prioritizes delivering the utmost value to suppliers and customers. In 2023, he donated 700 acres of his organic farm to create the nonprofit Quinn Institute as a regenerative organic research, education and health center with the vision and mission of “healing the earth by growing food as medicine.” In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Quinn has received numerous awards for his innovation and efforts. He has been married for 53 years and has five children and 21 grandchildren. R obert M. Quinn grew up on the wheat and cattle ranch his grandfather started in 1920 near Big Sandy, Montana. After attending local schools, he received a BS in botany and an MS in plant pathology from Montana State University and a PhD in plant biochemistry at the University of California, Davis.
