In addition to his clinical and consulting work, Mr. Hearns is an adjunct professor of developmental psychology at Grace Christian University, where he is committed to helping increase the pool of social workers available to the West Michigan community. He hopes to contribute to the growth of mitigation efforts at all levels of the court system and believes that all people are in a state of growth and cannot be defined solely by their past actions. Mr. Hearns credits his success to his faith and tenacity and looks forward to continuing to effect positive change by serving those in the most need. Kiuan J. Hearns, LPC, is a counselor specializing in behavioral health and substance use disorders working within the legal system as a mitigation specialist for a team of federal public defenders. He brings a whole-person philosophy to his work, informed by more than 15 years in community mental health, addiction recovery treatment, and programs serving children and youth experiencing homelessness. Mr. Hearns holds a BS in psychology from Grand Valley State University and an MA in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University and has completed specialized training in alcohol and drug addiction. Prior to pivoting to legal consulting, Mr. Hearns served as a clinical program supervisor at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health and a clinician and therapist at Arbor Circle, D.A. Blodgett St. John’s and Impact Counseling and Consulting. He began working with clients in the justice system as a mediator and evaluator at Kent County Friend of the Court in 2020 and accepted his current role as a mitigation specialist for six federal public defenders in 2022.
