He is proud to have played a key role in developing the company’s first-ever Scope 3 Use of Sold Products greenhouse gas emissions disclosure, and he looks forward to fostering strategic M&A partnerships for the business in the coming years. Mr. Bartelme credits his success to his commitment to creating positive change, as well as the example set for him by his father, a veteran and former automotive executive, and his mother, a manufacturing engineer and quality system auditor. Outside of his work with Caterpillar, he is a longtime supporter of children’s charities, including the Crittenton Centers, Special Olympics, Junior Achievement of Central Illinois, and Heart of Illinois United Way. James Bartelme Jr. is a United States Army veteran and expert in negotiating and managing complex contracts, having built his career at Caterpillar Inc. for nearly 25 years. Inspired by his family tradition of military service, he enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point, earning a BS in engineering and beginning his leadership journey as an infantry officer. Mr. Bartelme’s military tenure included deployments to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Central America, culminating as a company commander overseeing more than $50 million in equipment and 100 personnel. He would later earn an MS in engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology and an MBA at the University of Chicago. After completing his military service, Mr. Bartelme began his career with Caterpillar Inc. as a commercial buyer in the company’s fuel systems division. He quickly rose through various purchasing, sales and business development roles, in addition to building on his military background while in Caterpillar’s Defense & Federal Products business unit throughout the 2010s. During this time, he negotiated $2 billion in long-term contracts with the federal government and ultimately led the department’s U.S. sales division. JAMES BARTELME JR.
