273 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Leveraging more than four decades of practiced expertise, Dr. Erol Guler is well-versed as a leader in the field of engineering. Specializing in academia relating to geotechnical engineering, he has served as an adjunct professor at George Mason University since 2017. Additionally, since 2022, he has worked with GT Consultants LLC as a senior geotechnical principal engineer. In his other recent endeavors, Dr. Guler operated as the chief engineer of the Turkey operations of the global engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV from 2012 to 2017. Originally from Turkey, Dr. Guler previously excelled as a professor at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul from 1982 to 2017. For much of his time at the institution, he worked in the civil engineering department and served as the chair of the department. At the onset of his career, he also worked in the same department at Istanbul Technical University from 1978 to 1982. He was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholar grant to conduct advanced research as a Visiting Fulbright Professor at the University of Maryland between 1989 and 1991. Well-regarded for his creative output as well, Dr. Guler has authored many scholarly articles and papers in professional journals over the course of his career, and he offered a key lecture on geosynthetic functions for the IGS University Online Lecture Series in 2021. Dr. Guler also remains affiliated with several organizations, including the International Standards Organization, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the European Standards Organization, the International Geosynthetics Society, and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Likewise, he is a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers. As part of his vocational journey, he previously pursued a formal education, ultimately achieving a PhD in geotechnics at Istanbul Technical University in 1981. In accounting for his accomplishments, Dr. Guler is particularly proud to have developed a positive reputation as a well-known scientist in the field of geosynthetics and as a consulting engineer.
