281 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Drawing on nearly three decades of experience in the field of petrophysics — the study of the physical and chemical properties of rocks and their contained fluids — Natasa Mekic has distinguished herself as a principal petrophysicist at Weatherford International since 2017. Specializing in data science and sensor physics, she is primarily responsible for developing the algorithms and workflow needed to interpret data on behalf of companies in the oil and gas industry. Ms. Mekic previously served in various roles of scientific leadership at Halliburton, the Baker Hughes Company and Blackhawk Geoservices Inc. At the onset of her career, Ms. Mekic initially worked as a faculty member in the geophysics department at the University of Belgrade. A former student of the institution, she earned both a Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree. While her first professional interests resided in music — she was formerly ranked as the third best pianist in Serbia — Ms. Mekic ultimately capitalized on her talents in mathematics, physics and geology. In the years since, she has become well-regarded as a top researcher in the field of geophysics, received 14 U.S. patents, and contributed numerous articles and papers that have appeared in several professional publications. In honor of her accomplishments, Ms. Mekic was bestowed with a Silver Coin for Innovation and Excellence by Weatherford, and she received a Silver Award for similar qualities while employed with the Baker Hughes Company. Outside of her primary career endeavors, Ms. Mekic is proud of her contributions to public infrastructure while working with the Federal Highway Administration, through which she was engaged in evaluating the integrity of concrete for use in stability improvements for bridges. In accounting for her overall success, she largely credits the love and support of her family, as well as her penchant for hard work. Looking toward the future, Ms. Mekic aspires to become recognized as a fellow of petrophysics and be hailed as an inspirational leader in her field.
