Bearing special expertise in the lattermost field, she previously served as the superintendent of Community School District 15 in Brooklyn from 2009 to 2022. Ms. Skop is proud to have implemented a successful diversity plan in her district, which significantly expanded equitable access to quality middle schools and promoted a greater sense of community involvement. Ever committed to demonstrating and encouraging empathy for all people, Ms. Skop has held numerous positions of high leadership throughout the NYC Department of Education, including as a lead senior achievement facilitator, local instructional superintendent, and director of literacy and social studies. She also operated in a number of direct teaching roles, particularly at Community School District 21, where she was a teacher for first and second-grade students. Outside of her efforts in service to school children, Ms. Skop has also taught in higher academia for over two decades at Touro University. Inspired to teach from an early age, Ms. Skop has always seen education as a strong equalizer and path to lasting success. She first studied English and education at Brooklyn College, where she earned a BA in 1985. Following this accomplishment, she graduated with an MS in special education from Adelphia University in 1993. Ms. Skop subsequently achieved an advanced certificate in administration at Brooklyn College in 1999. Ms. Skop has been honored with numerous accolades over the course of her career, including an Educators for Student Success Educational Leadership Award in 2022 and the Shirley Chisholm Women of Excellence Award in 2018. She was also recognized as the New York State Teacher of the Year and as an Outstanding Educator by the United Federation of Teachers in 1994. Now retired after nearly four decades working in education, Anita Skop distinguished herself as a senior advisor to the deputy chancellor of the New York City Department of Education.
