227 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION Shirlene A. Thompson has cultivated a career of excellence as a proven leader in the field of education. With more than 35 years of practiced expertise to her credit, she specializes in special education, having operated as an independent contractor within the District of Columbia Public Schools for much of her career. Now retired from full-time work, she remains focused on her own academic goals. To wit, Ms. Thompson is actively pursuing a master’s degree in liberal studies, having previously earned a bachelor’s degree in the same area of study at Georgetown University in 2021. In her civic-minded efforts, Ms. Thompson remains active as the president and leading choir member of the Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Likewise, she is a volunteer for committee engagement at the Jones-Haywood Dance School and a volunteer mentor at AARP. She also offers her skills and insight to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Toastmasters International. Ms. Thompson additionally maintains her affiliation with the Honor Society Foundation. During the early stages of her career, Ms. Thompson aimed to begin her own business — a child development center. Furthermore, she was keenly focused on raising her daughter and serving as a strong role model. Today, she is grateful to have pursued her own higher education, and she hopes to establish her learning center sometime in the coming years. She is also grateful for her current position, which allows her to continue supporting her daughter and granddaughters. Ms. Thompson has always understood her desire to help children. Throughout her career, she has strived to offer personalized attention and help to youths, especially those with disabilities. Thus, she has staunchly dedicated herself to numerous nonprofit organizations and communities at both the local and national levels.
